Wednesday November 25, 2015 Jenner CA.
The sun was out and the wind was down as I put my boat in at Jenner this morning, but it was a bit chilly. I paddled across the river to the north side of Penny Island and headed down towards the river’s mouth.
At the lower end of Penny Island I crossed over the river headed towards the open river’s mouth area. The foam is from all the ocean water coming into the river from the ocean as it was just high tide, a high one for here around 6.5 feet. I followed the foam to the open river’s mouth.
The ocean was rough with lots of high waves breaking over the rocks at the jetty. Some people were enjoying the waves breaking over the rocks.
There were lots of birds and some harbor seals resting on the sandy beach.
The birds were mostly seagulls. Here’s some of them with the harbor seals.
I hung around the mouth area watching for a spell, then headed out. I went by this lone grebe fishing.
I was headed for the island back channel which I paddled up and saw this hawk sitting on this log getting some sun. It sat and watched me and didn’t fly off. Maybe a Sharp Shinned Hawk?
I worked my way up to Paddy’s rock as the wind was picking up a bit. The wind wasn’t real bad, but there was a chill in the air. I was getting chilled which means I needed to add another sweater which I didn’t have. I need to do something about that as I like to stay warm and cozy.
I paddled past Paddy’s rock and on up along the shoreline trying to find a place in the sun and out of the wind, but this area doesn’t have many spots like that as it’s mostly open.
The chill was going right though me, so I was thinking I should cut it short today and started heading back in.
I spied these three birds feeding along the shoreline. At first they stopped to watch me, but shortly continued their feeding. Maybe Short Billed Dowitcher?
I paddled up behind Paddy’s rock to get out of the chill a bit, noting there were some cormorants on the rock which is just in front of me here.
I noticed these cormorants had a green sheen to them. Click to enlarge the picture. Pelagic Cormorants?
It was too windy and cold on that side of the river so I paddled on over to the south shore and was paddling along here.
When I noticed this kingfisher on a bush. Would it stay for a picture or not? It stayed just long enough to snap a couple shots off and flew off as they usually do, but this time, not before I got a picture.
I pulled into this big redwood stump to get out of the chill for a bit, but it wasn’t working very well, but at least the sun was shining.
From there I paddled over to the little channel on the upper end of Penny Island as it’s usually out of the wind, but the tide had dropped by now and there wasn’t any water in that channel, so that didn’t work.
Ok, I’m’ going in for the day and paddled across the river to the boat ramp and went on home for the day.
I had planned to do some work in the yard, but the chill followed me home. I tried to get some stuff done, but it was just too cold for me, so I just puttered a bit and then went in the house for the day so I could warm up.
That was my day.
