A Ride In the Hills Just After It Rained

Thursday March 27, 2025 Guerneville CA.

More rain

But it mostly stopped by noon. Barry showed up for a bike ride up into the forest. But first we had to load up his truck with some redwood woodchips. I have lots of woodchips now.chips1

It started to drizzle a little when we took off on the bikes, but soon stopped.

We rode on up through the state park to check out the road I’m working on to see how it’s doing in the rain. It looked pretty good as the work I’ve been doing on it is starting to pay off as fair as the rain water running down it.

We rode around and stopped  here to have a look at the small town of Guerneville.view2

Broom

We stopped here so Barry could cut some of these scotch broom plants back which were starting to block the trail. Actually, the broom is starting to block a lot of the roads up here, as when it gets wet, it tends to lean over onto the roads and trails. They do have nice yellow flowers though. The down side is when it rains and they overhang the trails, we get pretty wet riding though them. Barry was leading so he got the wettest.broom3

At the top

Eventually, we  made it up to our rest spot at the top for a break.rest4

Rocks

We took off again and stopped in a couple of spots to throw rocks off the road as they are hard on the bike’s tires. We cleared about 300 feet of the road here.rocks5

A little further down the road, we stopped and did the same thing.rocks6

A bit cold

Since we were a bit wet from the broom, we got a bit cold so headed on home to warm up.

Cherry trees

I noticed the cherry trees were blooming.cherry8

And I spent a bit of time with the chickens.hens7

Nice day.

We have the Broom here in the SoCal mountains and though beautiful, it is very invasive when it takes hold. At one point Cal Trans spent over $350,000 to remove it from one of our two major roads and now it is “back bigger and better” than before. What Cal Trans didn’t consider was the fact that the Broom seed was ready to pop when they did the work and they just helped blow the seeds all over the place. Our CA tax dollars at work.

Yes, you can’t get rid of it because of the many many seeds. YOu can only slow it down a bit. Mostly, we only trim it back to get by it.
