Getting the Skidder Track Back On With Little Logs

Monday January 20, 2025 Guerneville CA.

Forest road work

I’m trying to finish up the road prep on the old dirt road today,…………But

I got up to my rigs and warmed up the Skiddy and hauled some rock down the road to put on a muddy spot and fix two of my water ditch road crossing that weren’t working right and letting some water run down the steep road, making things real muddy.rigs1

I fixed the water crossings and was going by up to the rock slide to get another load of rock, when.

Track off

My left track hit a little tree root in the road and got off the rollers a bit. Track off.

I tried to get it back on by moving forward and back but no luck. At least it wasn’t blocking the road.skiddy2

It’s a bit hard to tell, but you can see the little rollers are off the track and so is the front and back bit rollers.track3

Muddy tracks

Things are real muddy too. I’ve been using this up in the hills for about a month and haven’t been able to clean all the mud out of the track. I plan to get it home shortly and clean that all up. Even if I cleaned them, I’d have to do it every day as things are muddy up here because of all the springs popping out of the hills.

Headed home for help

I went on home and got a chain saw and rounded up my brother Tom to help and returned.tom4

We worked on it but were not having much lock when neighbor Jim came by so we had to shoot the bull a little.Jim5

Track back on

I took the chainsaw and cut some more little logs to help get the track back on and we tried again and got it back on by going forward and back with the little logs inserted in the track. Goodie.fixing6

We decided that was enough work for one day as it was almost four by now, so I drove the skiddy back up to it’s parking spot where I looked at the track again. Humm. seems like the little middle rollers are still not right, so we got the little logs and tried again, but after some inspection decided the were all ok and didn’t need fixing.rig7

How it works

It works like this. You put the little logs in the track teeth and move the track and that causes the track to roll back on the wheels and line up right. To do the end wheels you just put the little logs  in the teeth by the wheel and rotate the track and it rolls back on. It’s actually the easier way compared to the other ways to do it and  much faster too. Something I learned on YouTube. This is the second time I’ve had to do this.sticks8

Nice day in the forest.
