Forest road work
I wanted to fuel my dozer today and have a look at some other parts of the road I need to work on.
I drove on up this road to where I was working.
I stopped here as I wanted to check out a big culvert that crosses under the road here. I needed to see what shape it was in.
Culvert
There’s a 3 foot diameter culvert down there so I worked my way down to check it out.
Here’s the entrance to the culvert. That big old log needs to get out of there. I’ll bring the chainsaw back in a bit to cut it up some.
The other end
This is the output side of the culvert. Seems there’s two little logs sticking out of the end of the culvert. They must of got washed down during a big storm and went into the culvert.
Yep, two logs coming out of the culvert.
They appear to go about twenty feet inside the culvert and now they need to come out of there. I think I’ll talk to the park guys and get them to work on these.
I went back to the other end and cut that little log out of the input side.
And then I left and rode up the road. I checked this area out again as it’s a narrow spot and hard for big trucks to get through. I need to improve it a bit.
Dozer
The dozer wasn’t parked far ahead. I fueled it up and greased it.
The pond
With the work done, I went for a ride around the place. I stopped at the pond and was surprised to find it up about a foot and not too muddy.
Ravens have been drinking here in large numbers lately. Large numbers of them drink and bathe here in a day. Since the water isn’t as muddy, they haven’t been using it as much. I’m wondering if them drinking the water was enough to cause it to go down like it did and now it’s coming back up.
Where’s the chainsaw
I was riding around the place when I ran into a tree across the road. I stopped to get out the chainsaw, but it wasn’t in the rig. I used it a bit earlier at the culvert and thought, oh no, it’s likely been picked up by someone by now so I hurried back down to the spot and looked for it and it wasn’t in sight.
I hopped back down where I was working and there it was inside the culvert, right where I left it.
I continued my ride around the ranch and stopped up at the high point for a break and to enjoy the day a bit.
Now that I had a chainsaw, I rode back to where the tree was down across the road and cut it out of the way.
Then I moved onto the next one, just up ahead and cut it up to move off the road.
From there, I headed for home and a nap.
Nice day.
Wish you’d been my neighbor all those years we lived out in the boonies. No rain at all or gully washers made road maintenance a never ending task. I suppose it is no matter where.
