Rainy day
Yep, it was raining again when I got up today.
And worst than that, my back was already screaming at me and I needed to get the generator started. The generator starts hard when cold, you have to pull with all your might and the old back doesn’t like it, so that’s why it hurts.
I went over to my bother’s place. He’d gone to the farmer’s market so I talked with Dominique and said I’d need to do the ice pack on my back for a half hour before I thought I could start the generator.
Phone guy
About that time the phone guy pulls in with his truck to repair my downed phone line which he did rather quickly.
Cold pack
After about a half hour on the cold pack, it helped quite a bit but still my back hurt some. I gassed and put oil in the generator and got it started up using some starter fluid to make it easier to start and that helped.
Starting fluid
I used the starting fluid when the generator was cold and it worked well with no problems, but later in the day when we refueled it, the generator was hot and the starter fluid was a bit much and the heat of the engine ignited it and it was too much and lucky I didn’t blow the generator up.
I learned when the generator was hot, the oil was thinner and it was much easier to start.
Ice pack
After that, I put the ice pack back on my back for another half hour and had a nap too.
Ride in the rain
Later in the day, I decided to get out of the house for awhile so I hunted up my best rain gear, the heavy stuff and got suited up.
It was still raining but not too hard as I rode the dirt bike up into the hills to look around and enjoy the rain.
It was a bit cold out and I didn’t have any gloves, so my hands got a bit cold, but the rest of me stayed warm and dry as I made my rounds.
Everything looked nice and green and wet. I ran into a few more old dead trees down , blocking roads, and when I did, I just turned around and went another way.
It was too wet out for pictures so I couldn’t pull my camera out.
After an hour or so, my hands were cold so I headed for home.
After getting out of the wet rain gear and hanging it up to dry, my brother Tom came by and we gassed the generator up for the evening.
It’s still raining, but not really that hard. It’s not the rain that causes us problems, but the high winds can do some damage, that’s why we still don’t have any power back on yet. Power is supposed to be restored on Sunday.
So now I’m home, warm and cozy.
Nice day.
Bob, if you are in a pinch for a generator, I’ve got an extra 4kW, old, noisy, but reliable. Let me know. Also, I missed the opportunity to paddle with you from Wohler Bridge ( I bought a key) too late now, the dam is deflated. Maybe next year!

Electricity is over rated, unless you need ice. 70+ dry degrees here.
