More Rock Slide Work In the Pouring Down Rain

Rock slide work

I had an email in the box this morning saying the rock slide I took out yesterday had slid again and did I have time to fix it.

I got all my rain gear on as it was still raining fairly hard and rode on up there. The dozer needed some oil in the transmission so I filled it up and drove on down the to nearby slide.

A neighbor had been working on it and had it cleared out, but he piled all the rock along the road so there wasn’t much room for more rock to come down from the slide without fully blocking the road again.

I worked on pushing the piles of rock up and down the road to dissipate it. While I was doing that, it poured down rain which got all the rock stuff soaking wet and things got a bit sloppy.

Also, while I was working on it, the slide slid four more times, once with lots of rock coming down.

After a few hours work, I got all the rock spread on the road and was hoping the slide would stop.slide1

This is the upper part of the rock slide. Water is coming out of the rock and it’s all real loose, so more is bound to come down, especially with all the rain we are getting.slide2

I went over to the park guys shop to chat a bit and give the slide a little time to see if it was going to slide right away. When I came back at 4, the slide hadn’t slid, so I headed for home.

Tree across the road

I didn’t get far before I ran into this downed tree across the road that wasn’t there earlier when I came down it. I had my chainsaw, so cut it up in pieces to make the pieces light enough for me to move off the road.tree3

I had one more small tree to clear higher up on the hill.

I stopped at my cousin’s place on the ridge top to give them a report of the condition of the road and we shot the bull for a bit.

I rode on down the hill in the pouring down rain and made it home where I stoked the woodstove up to warm up a bit.

Rain gauge

I use a bucket for a rain gauge as the little ones just don’t go high enough. The bucket is not perfectly accurate, but close enough.

It says about 13  inches for the storm, so far.raingauge4

Chickens

It was time to lock the chickens in for the night and they were all up on the roost early and a bit wet.chickens

Nice day working in the rain.

Lots of Rain and A Rock Slide

Wednesday November 20, 2024 Guerneville CA.

Rainy day

It started raining last night about 2 and hasn’t stopped much. Right now at, 5 PM, I see about 7 inches of rain in my gauge. It’s still raining nicely.

Road work

I got an email from the state park guys this morning asking if I could remove a small rock slide on the road I’ve been working on as they didn’t have any machinery close by to work on it.

I went up there and  had a look. My dozer was parked nearby, so I got it fired up and took the slide out and did some repairs too.

It all worked out real good as the spot with the slide is a narrow spot in the road that I was going to do some repairs on real soon, but the rain started first.

The rock from that little slide was just what I needed to repair that narrow spot so I worked on that and it came out pretty good and is much easier to get by that part of the road now.

However, when I was removing the rock slide, I noticed the rocky hill above was real unstable and likely to slide a lot more soon. That would be good as I’d have even more rock to do the repair even better.

Dozer work

I pulled up to the dozer as it was parked near the rock slide. It just sits out there in the rain. Turned the key and it started right up and I was off to fix the rock slide.dozer1

It was mostly too wet for pictures and I also get involved with what I’m doing on the dozer and just forget to take any.

Shovel work

I parked the dozer and rode on up the road to check it out. This road is real bad and has a lot of water running down it. I stopped here to direct the water off the road. I also did that in several other places on the road.ditching2

Cousin’s place

I made it up to my cousin’s place on the ridge top and found  her outside with her hoe, just starting to do some road work.

I helped her ditch the water off her driveway road. Eventually, I’ll be up here with Skiddy to do a better job of draining the road.ditching3

Our place

From there I went over to our place to have a look. All the roads on our place don’t have much problems as they are all out-sloped so the water runs off of them, instead of down them, which causes erosion problems otherwise.

Pond

I went by the pond and found it all filled up and overflowing like it should in the drainage ditch I made for it.pond4

It’s almost large enough to really be called a pond now.pond5

I worked my way down the hill and stopped here to remove enough of this downed redwood tree so I could pass. Did I mention that it’s been raining pretty hard all day long.tree6

I made it home and changed out of my wet rain gear and stoked up the wood stove to warm up a bit.

At five I went out to check the rain gauge which registered 7 inches and it’s still raining fairly hard at 6.rain7

Nice day, it’s always nice to go out and play in the rain, especially in bigger storms like this one.
