A ride in the forest

Barry showed up this morning so we took off on our bikes for a ride in the forest.

We eventually ended up on the neighbor’s place where we’ve been clearing the brush off his roads.

That was good as even though I cleared them I don’t really know where they all go and also I could see how I did. The goal was to get them open.

Tom and I did a fairly good job opening up the roads, but they could use some improvement which I expected. Some parts could use a bit more brush clearing and some parts could use a bit more smoothing out which I plan to do eventually. At least the roads are open so the neighbor can use them

Anyway, here’s Barry checking out one of the old roads we didn’t open and after Barry checked it out, we won’t as it’s too steep to be of  much use.

Break

We rode our bikes around all the roads and then ended up at our break area at the top of the hill for a break.

Not a cloud in the sky, but the fog is sneaking in from the ocean to keep it cool around here, which is always nice.

After a good break we took off and rode around some more until we got tired out and headed for home. Nice ride.

Nap time

I needed one so I took a nap for awhile.

Fueling up

Then I took  my side by side and rode up into the hills were Skiddy was parked and put the rest of my diesel in the Skiddy so I could go to town and get some more fuel this evening.

Visiting

Then I rode over to visit some other neighbors who live high on the hill going up this road.

They certainly do have a good view from up there.

I found them home and we discussed some grass fed beef we are buying together and shot some bull too.

I headed on home from there and that was my day.

I did get to town to get some more diesel fuel this evening, and the birds ate all the rest of my cherries, but I did get my fill of them.

Neighbors road work

Tom and I rode on up to where Skiddy was parked at the neighbors this morning to continue the road work clearing the huge amounts of brush off them. We are doing this for free for the neighbor.

Found some money

I climbed in the machine and started it up and then I saw an envelope stuck on the side of it by the controls.

It said, Thanks for all the work. Here’s some money for diesel, thanks. There was a thousand dollars in that little envelope. :O)

Get to work

We started off here on this road. Tom had to get this tree cut so I could start down the road with Skiddy pushing the tree off the road.

Tom cuts them

He cuts them and I push them off the road. It’s easier to push them off the road once they are cut otherwise they hung up and limbs try to get me in the cab and  rip my hoses off the machine which I have to be careful of.

Tom also trims these overhanging branches off as they also try to get the rigs hoses and me if we don’t.

Here’s Tom trimming those branches so I can get by easily.

Big muddy spot

Just around corner from that was a big muddy spot from a big spring which took a bit more time to get around if I didn’t want to get stuck.

I worked on that while Tom explored the road we were working our way down while I did that. I didn’t get stuck and we continued on down the road.

Road narrows

The road narrowed down here so I had to be more careful not to go over the side when backing up.

Dangerous one

I ran into this long downed tree on that narrow road and got a bit tangled up in it with it over my machine and almost falling on me. I carefully backed out from it and it almost tore my  hoses off to the bucket and I told Tom he’d have to cut it up a bit so that is what he is doing.

Tom made the cut and didn’t get his saw pinched and  most of the tree fell down where I could push it off the road and get by. With the road being narrow here I didn’t have much room to maneuver the machine.

That road ended up at the guys house, which turned out to be his wife’s walking road which she hasn’t been able to use a long while.

Last road

Once I made it to the house, we turned back and cleared this road that turned off the other road and went up to his water tank. When we start a road, we don’t usually know where it’s going until we clear it. That was the last one for now. I think we got them all but if not, we’ll come back at a later date.

From there I rode the machine on over to my cousin’s  place where I parked it for my next work at some more neighbor’s places.

Tom gave me a ride home.
