Getting the Chainsaw Stuck In a Tree and Rats

Thursday August 25, 2022 Guerneville CA.

What to do today?

I wasn’t feeling like doing much of anything today. So I did some chair hopping and thought what if I didn’t do anything?

Just one thing

After some more chair hopping I decided to at least get one thing done and that was to try and fix the chainsaw chain. I’ve been doing something wrong when I sharpen it and it goes sideways and binds up when I try to cut a big log.

Getting to it

I got to the chainsaw in the late afternoon and had a good look at the chain and decided I’d filed one side of the rakers wrong. The rakers are the teeth that set how thick of a chip the saw cuts and my chain needed to be filed down so the saw teeth could get a good bite.

Testing it out

Well, of course after getting that done I needed to give it a test out.

I filled the saw up with gas and oil and put it on the quad runner and headed up into the hills as I knew where there were some larger trees down across the roads up there.

The test

This is what the first one looked like as I arrived to get it off the road. It died and fell over, a tan oak tree.treedown1

I tried the saw out to see how I did sharpening the chain and it was much improved but still not perfect, but at least it cut pretty good. I had to cut the logs small enough to push them off the road.logs2

I got that done and worked up a bit of a sweat and rested a bit before heading out to the next one over at my cousin’s place. Cleared and ready to pass.road3

A big one

I knew the downed tree at my cousin’s place was a big one and almost turned around and left when I saw it.trees4

The chain on the saw could still use a bit of improvement but I was able to get through the logs, getting the top one off first,…………… But.

It’s stuck good now

I almost had the bottom log cut but when I cut thought it, the log fell just enough to pinch my saw blade in the log real good. I couldn’t move it, it was stuck good.stucksaw5

What to do?

I didn’t have any tools to help out with getting the saw unstuck, so I looked around for a block and a lever after thinking about it for a bit. Most of the lever stuff was a bit rotten so I tried to find a good one.

Rotten

But the first lever turned out to be rotten and broke on me as most of the stuff on the ground was rotten.lever6

I found another lever and was able to  move the heavy log a bit but still not enough to get the saw out.lever7

I tried the lever on the other side of the log and almost got it out, but finally had to move it back to the other side to finish the job.lever8

I got the saw out and finished cutting the logs and got them on the ground.logs9

I cut the one log in half so I could roll it off the road which took a bit of work, also known as exercise. :O)logs10

Not today

I’d pretty much had enough for the day, so I continued on down the road and took the lower one headed back when I ran into some more down trees.quad12

And just past those ones there were even more, so I loaded back up the saw and turned around and tried the middle road.trees13

But the middle road  had more trees down on it and I didn’t want to get any more exercise for the day so I turned around again and rode back up the hill going back the way I’d come.trees11

Seems I got a bit more accomplished today then I thought I would.

Rat report

I’ve been watching the rats in my chicken pen with the onion soup and baking soda bait I set out for them. They were going by it but not to it as they were being real couscous. After watching for the second night I went out and put a few oats in front of the can and when I went back in the house they were on those oats. It seems they are more willing to go to what they where there for in the first place without being so couscous. I think they’d make it to the onion soup if given enough time. I put that batch in the garage for them. No cam on that one.

So, tonight I mixed a new batch up with ground oats and baking soda and put a few oats outside the bait can. They came to the oats in a short time and seem to be interested of what’s in the can so I’ll keep watching them to see what happens. I think at least one of them is hooked, or should I say highly interested in what’s in the bait can.

Nice day.

Blackberry Vines, Chicken Half Door, Forest Ride and Rodent Control

Wednesday August 24, 2022 Guerneville CA.

Blackberry vine pruning time

It’s time to do some pruning on the wild blackberry vines. This time of year the tips grow real fast to try to get the tips of the vines grown into the ground to start growing roots on them. They grow real fast to try to accomplish this and then more vines grow on these next year.

I got my pruners out and started on these little ones under the mulberry tree.vines1

There’s plenty of them growing around the yard. I worked on them on and off resting my back as that doesn’t seem to like doing this too well.vines2

Eventually I gave in for now for my back and did some chair hopping for a bit.

Chicken coop half door

Once my back was rested up I set up the chicken coop half door. I use this when I want to let the big ones out with my automatic door and not let the little peeps out as it’s too dangerous out there for them until they get bigger. Hawks and snakes and whatever can get them do, so I’ve learned to keep them penned up.

The full larger door is in the back of this half door and opens about 7 in the morning so the big guys can get out to graze around the yard and not the little ones. I also have opened up the pen door that the little guys are in so their momma’s can go out with the other big ones and the little peeps then get the run of the whole chicken coop.

I put something for them to jump on to help get over the half door, but they don’t need it.doors3

After that I did a nap and some chair hopping enjoying the yard.

Off for a ride in the forest

And later in the day I rode the dirt bike up into the hills for a ride and had to stop and turn around at this big tree that fell down. It was rotten.tree4

Always good exercise

I rode around the place for a couple hours or so, stopping in places to throw brush and rocks off the road and got some good exercise.

Working on the rodents

Back home and just before dark, I mixed up some more bait for the rodents.

I suspect the inferred lights on the cam I have in the chicken coop bothers the rats and mice and makes them real cagy while in front of it as they can see these six red spots starring down on them, so I mixed up this plate of the stuff and stuffed it into the chicken pen’s ceiling where there are no lights to bother them. They run around on the chicken wire on the ceiling a lot so it’s in a good spot.

I’ll be able to see if they get into this one.bait

The other one in the pen is in that can and I can tell they know something is in there but they’ll take some time to get used to the can before they try it. At least that’s about the way I’ve seen things work with the cam on.can

This guy says it works

This is the guy that used the baking soda and he says it works well.

And reading what a lot of his commenters have to say, it sounds like it works well.

Nice day.
