A few rain showers too while kayaking today
It rained hard this morning before I got up, so I wasn’t sure what I’d do today. But when I got up, there were just a a few showers so I checked with the weather guy. He said showers today, with a cold front coming to shore this afternoon, so I headed on out to Jenner to kayak for the day.
As I arrived at Jenner, it wasn’t raining or showering and looked good, so I didn’t put my rain pants on.
I paddled across to Penny Island and decided to go down to the river’s mouth to see what was going on.
On the way, I saw a bunch of turkey vultures sitting in some debree on the shoreline so I went by to see what they were doing. They appeared to be just sitting around taking it easy.
Rained on
I continued on down the river and a big shower hit me, so I headed on over to the shoreline and got out of my boat and put my rain pants on, ready for the next shower.
There were quite a few birds resting on the beach, mostly seagulls with some brown pelicans and some cormorants too.
Some of the brown pelicans and some seagulls.
River’s mouth is still open, sorta
I made it down to the mouth. It was just getting to high tide and the ocean was fairly rough. I sat around in this area for awhile, just watching, looking out the open mouth into the ocean.
I could see that the mouth is in some ways closed with sand already. Can you see the sand across the mouth in this picture? It’s higher than the river level, so ocean water can come in and fish too, but the river water can’t get back to the ocean. That sand will likely be even higher by tomorrow. Sometimes the mouth works like a one way valve, letting water in, but not out to the ocean.
I was having a hard time staying in one place as the ocean waves coming into the mouth were pushing me around, so I went over to Haystack Rock and sat for a bit, which is all the way to the end of the river, just past the open mouth.
I was also starting to get some motion sickness coming on as I have a problem with that. Looking though the camera makes this problem even worse when the water is rough.
Sitting by Haystack Rock looking back toward the water rushing into the mouth. from the ocean at the right.
Good thing I put my rain pants on as there was a rather hard shower or two while I sat there.
I was still getting pushed around by the water, so after awhile I decided to leave and go up river.
Foam is for sitting
On the way, I came across this foam from the ocean and decided to stop in it for some time, as where the foam is there aren’t any currents that will push me around. That’s why the foam is there and not dispersed.
I sat in the foam in this spot in front of the mouth.
This was my view of the open mouth and the water breaking over the sand as in the left of the picture.
I was day dreaming in the foam with my eyes closed which I would open once in awhile.
The foam monster
When I opened my eyes this time, I noticed the foam was getting higher and looked like it would creep over the side of my boat if I didn’t do something real soon.
I pulled out of the foam just in time. As I watched it to see why it was suddenly rising, a big log emerged right next to where I had been sitting.
I wasn’t feeling too good from all the motion so decided to go on up to the east side of Penny Island and spend some time there resting up, so I headed that way. It started to rain and continued until about the time I got the the east end channel of Penny Island.
A great blue heron was sitting in that protected spot as I started to enter the little channel on the east end of Penny Island.
I pulled on in as the heron took off. I spotted an egret as I entered the channel, center of the picture.
I sat around in the channel for some time, but I wasn’t feeling any better, so I decided to head on in for the day.
Headed on over to the Jenner boat ramp from the Penny Island channel on the east end.
I went on home and had something to eat and checked my email and saw my friend Marty wanted to bring his computer by so I could do all the updating on it for him as his connection is limited.
So, he came by and we started the computer updating and doing it’s thing. He left the computer with me and went on home and I had a bit of a nap and that motion sickness finally left me. :O)
