Constructing a Chicken Water Container and I Still Can’t Find My Lost Chick

Sunday July 1, 2018 Guerneville CA.

Need a watering system

I’m starting to see the end of all the construction of the chicken stuff.

I still have a few things to do but they are minor compared to what I’ve already done.

Today I needed to get the automatic water system for the chickens completed.

Water container construction

I had this piece of plastic five gallon container that I’d  cut into this quite some time ago and thought it would make a good watering system. I purchased a flout valve that clamps onto it’s side. It needs a top to keep the chicken out of the water and keep the water cleaner so I rounded up this board and cut it to size and cut a hole in it for a hole to hook to the valve. I only had to trim the front side of the plastic container so they could get their heads into the water.tub

I screwed the board to the plastic container and this is the finished product.water

Water container installed

Here it is installed and full of water and ready to go. It will take a bit of time for the chicks to discover it and start using it.installed

A few of my peeps

The chicks come out of the coop in the morning when I let them out and run all over feeding away until they get full or tired and they rest for awhile.

Here they are resting.peeps

Tried again to find my chick

Around 3 I decided to go over to my brother’s chickens and try once more to find my lost chicken.

But it was already too late and I still couldn’t see too good. I looked through all the chicks and just couldn’t tell which one it was so that didn’t work out.

Here’s my brother’s chicks and mine is in there someplace.chicks

I did a bit of tidying up putting some of the tools I’d been using away and still have more of that to do.

That was it for the day. Nice day.

Roost Ladder Construction, Peeps Doing Well, But Can’t Find One Of My Chicks

Saturday June 30, 2018 Guerneville CA.

Working on the chicken enclosures

I went out to let the chicks out into the run this morning and then sat around a bit figuring out what I wanted to accomplish today.

I wanted to get another run ready for the chicks. I needed to seal up the door spaces and make a ladder so larger birds can get up to the roosts.

I went back in the house for another cup of coffee.

When I came back out some of the peeps where up on a perch resting.peeps3

And some of them where still eating away.chicks4

A ladder for the roost

I measured and cut up some redwood limbs to make a ladder to the roost area for older birds, not really for the chicks, but I wanted to get it done before I let the little chicks into this pen.roost1

Here’s another view of the ladder and roost I constructed today.ladder2

Cute Peeps

These chicks have a hard  life, eh.peeps5

Peeps like worms

It was warm out today so I spent most of the rest of the day napping. I did go out and dig up some worms for the peeps a couple times. I need to get them feeding on them while I dig so I don’t have to collect them. They are still a bit skittish, but at least the last time I dug a few of them where close by. They really like the worms, mostly big night crawlers.

Sealing up another run

In the evening I worked on closing up the spaces in  my enclosure doors. I cut some pvc pipe and wired it into the cracks so the little peeps can’t get through. I got about half way through that when the enclosure sprinkler kicked on so I put the rest off until tomorrow.

Can’t find my chick

An hour or so before dark I walked over to my brothers coop to see if I could find one of my checks that got mixed in with his checks.

I walked on past these hens on his roost on the way in.chickens6

He has over a hundred chicks and they look very similar to my chicks.

Here they are as I approached  his coop.chicks7

Where’s my chick

I went inside and tried to find the one that is a little different but the lighting was bad and even though I looked a lot, I couldn’t really be sure so I gave it up for now. I’ll have to come back earlier in the day.chicksdark

Armstrong Valley Farm

On the way out I walked around my brother’s garden. He runs Armstrong Valley Farm and does some of the farmer’s markets around here. I didn’t find anything to eat, but a lot of stuff growing.garden

It was getting dark when I got back to the house so I closed the chicks up as they were in the coop.

And that was it for me today. Nice day.
