Who Will Win, The Big Tree Stump Or Me

Saturday November 9, 2024 Guerneville CA.

Bulldozer work

Around noon, I rode up to where the dozer was parked and tried to start it, but no key. I went on home the short distance and got one.

After letting the dozer warm up a bit, I turned it around on this narrow road and headed down to the spot I was going to repair today.dozer1

Big old stump

It’s an old slide from a few years ago that had some big stumps stuck in it. This is a pretty big redwood tree stump that I had a hard time digging out. It’s bigger than it looks in this picture and didn’t really want to move so I kept digging at it.stump2

I’m making progress and it’s just starting to move a little.stump3

I won

I finally popped it out onto the road and pushed it over the side to get it out of the way.stump4

Then I worked on cleaning the road up and smoothing it out a bit.road6

It’s looking pretty good. I out-sloped it so it will drain when it rains.rig7

The finished product. I will do a bit  more work on it later to get it just right, after it rains a bit which it is supposed to do tomorrow.road8

My next project was down  the road a short distance, so I drove on down there.road5

Big Old log

I need to move this big fir tree log as it’s in the way of the road for big trucks to get past.log9

Helpers

Jim and his dog were helping me today, throwing roots off the road and just helping when they could.jim10

I worked the big log down onto the road with the dozer, carefully, and then pushed it down the road a bit to get it out of the way.log11

Here’s a good place for it, I pushed it into the little ravine, out of the way.logs12

Those were the two main things I wanted to do today. I did some more work here and there for about another hour, then parked the dozer and went on home for the day and did some chair hopping around the yard.

The sky is clouding up, so maybe we will get that rain tomorrow.clouds13

Nice day, playing with big toys.

Forest Trail Work, Can I Get Under the Huge Tree

Friday November 8, 2024 Guerneville CA.

Forest work

I had a big tree that fell across a trail I’ve been working on. There was a lot of brush under it and I was wondering if I could just go under the tree as it was in a dangerous spot to cut it out of the way.

On the way, I heard Tom working on cleaning up some trees so I stopped to talk for a bit.Tom1

Trail

After that, I continued on up to where the trail started and rode my little quad runner up it very carefully as it was pretty narrow for the quad runner.trail2

I rode on up this trail going slow, as not to fall off it.trail3

As you can see, the quad barely fits on the trail.quad4

I was doing pretty good.quad5

Oh oh a narrow spot

I’d forgotten this place a big tree slid across the trail and made it real narrow in this spot. All I had was my feet to move some dirt and fill it up so I could get across as there was no turning around with the quad.trail6

I made it through that, but just barely and made it up to the ridge top where the riding was much easier and safer.trail7

I rode the quad as far as I could then parked and walked as the trail wasn’t finished in this part. I was able to walk under this big tree I put the trail under last winter.tree8

Can I get under this log

But I wasn’t sure I could get under this big one and I couldn’t see until I cut this brush out of the way, so I worked on that.brush9

It looks like I can dig out the trail and get under this big log ok, but I didn’t have any tools with me to do that.log10

I still  had some gas left in my chainsaw, so I walked out the trail a bit further to cut out this little tree.trees11

And then onto this last one. I sat down for a break here before I cut it out of the way.tree12

That was the last tree so the trail was cleared of trees I needed to cut out of the way.trail13

A little further up the trail, I ran into this chair so sat for a good while, enjoying the peacefulness of the forest.chair14

I hauled the chair back to the big tree I’m going under so it will be there for breaks when I come back up with tools to work on the trail.

Nice day.
