Traveling To Troy Oregon and We Arrive

Saturday September 18, 2021 Troy Oregon

Third travel day

We got going about an hour earlier than normal this morning, abut 9:30 as we had a long drive today to get to Troy before dark.

We traveled up a lot of desert type highways that were real good roads like this one.road1

Truck wreck

I think this truck was down in the ravine off to the side of the road. They were in the ravine trying to get the trailer out I believe.wreck2

Rain

Just below La Grande we ran into some significant rain on highway 84 for quite some time. Marty’s windshield wipers weren’t working as he needed new ones which he was going to get a little further up the road. He had a bit of a hard time seeing when big trucks passed him.

We stopped at the Wal-Mart when we left the highway and he installed them, good thing as we hit some more rain. Marty purchased an Oregon fishing license and I got a permit for my boat.

We fueled up in Enterprise as it was the last gas before heading to Troy.

Enterprise is a small town with  mostly farming around it.

We left town on this road headed north to Troy about an hour and a half driving time to Troy from Enterprise.farms3

We turned onto this road that led down to Troy.clouds4

Local boys

We were headed down this road to Troy when two guys came out of a farm and drove ahead of us down the road. When they stopped we pulled up and chatted with them to find out if there were any cell phone hot spots in this area. It turned out not much in the way of cell phone coverage in this area. A river runs by the tiny town of Troy in that canyon.gorge5

Troy

Here we are entering the small town of Troy. There’s only ten or so houses in Troy with very few of them occupied all the time.troy6

There is this café, bar and RV resort in town. See all the guys out front by the car that we waved to as we went by as they gave us a thumbs up for our old vans. We drove by them and parked in the rear by the bridge that goes across the river just out of sight in this picture.guys7

Shooting the bull with some local guys

They saw us pull in by the bridge and came over to have a look at the vans and shoot the bull for a bit. These were all local guys from Enterprise out for a ride on a Saturday.

Ho, ho, internet

They were all real friendly and the guy that ran the café place was there with lots of local information. Turns out he has internet at the store that he said we can use so you’ll likely get daily posts most of the time as we have our adventure in this area.

Camp spot

It was going to get dark soon so Marty and I pried ourselves away from those guys and we went to camp at this place just outside of town owned by the Fish and Game up here. A free camp as most of the camps up here are, except for the RV stuff in town. This was is called Grizzly Flat.camp8

Nice to have a van

We’d been driving for three days so we just wanted to camp and relax which we did. About dark it began to rain lightly just enough to make drops of water fall out of the trees on us. That’s when it’s nice to have a van.

Tomorrow we plan to mostly relax and maybe go for a short drive to check out the river up from Troy to check out fishing and other camp spots.

Nice day

Marty and I Adventure to Troy Oregon, Traveling Days

Thursday, Friday September 16, 17, 2021 Traveling Nevada and Oregon

Traveling to Troy Oregon

I drove on over to Marty’s house which is on the way and got there about 9:30 or so to leave on our trip as it’s a long ways to the north eastern part of Oregon where Troy is located on the Grand Rhone River.vans

The route

We were going to Winnemucca, Nevada and then on up 95 towards Troy.

We decided to start off the trip taking the longer way but easier drive and off we went about 10:30.

Short cuts

Both vans were running pretty good. I know some short cuts so we took them when we could and stopped for a break in this wildlife refuge.refuge2

After a good break we got back on the road and took this shortcut by Beale Air Base and stopped  here for another break for a bit.beale3

Our first destination was here near where highway 20 meets highway 80 at this power company helicopter loading area where we had something to eat and a good break before getting back on the road and then things went to hell.pge4

Here is where we parked for that break. Nice and peaceful.rest5

Sucks

We got back on the road and were heading down 80 to Truckee when both lanes came to a crawl for several hours.

We’d hoped to get to our camp before dark but not now. It got dark on us as we crawled along with a zillion other cars and trucks.

It turned out a work crew had set up a merge that wasn’t working where it looked like they were going to work during the night. And to boot, no one was working yet, so it was a real waste. That merge line was so long it must of lasted most of the night or  maybe longer.

Long day driving

It was good to get through it and now we still had a few more hours to drive in the dark to our camp.

We were pretty beat by now but we made it to this spot on a power line maintenance road.

Camp

Here we are in the morning just about take off for the day.camp6

We made it to Winnemucca and gassed up and headed  north on highway 95. We stopped here for a break just over the border going into Oregon from Nevada.plans7

Needed to find  a camp spot for the night early

We didn’t want to drive as long as we had to yesterday so we needed to figure out where we could camp for the night. After some thought I suggest Antelope Reservoir still a couple hours up the road and I wasn’t really sure exactly where.

As it turned out it was in just about the right spot as we were ready to quit for the day. We got to camp around 4 so we were able to have a nice break.

Antelope Reservoir

We decided to camp here just over the water for a view.lake12

Camped for the night, resting up.lake13

Lots of critters

At first we thought these were deer but they turned out to be geese resting for the day.gease8

Yep, they are resting alright.gooses13

Lots of white pelicans

There were also several groups of white pelicans on the water.pels9

Another big group of white pelicans just resting.pels10

Of course, antelope

Marty says what are those two white things that we couldn’t see this good, so I put the camera on them with a bit of zoom.lopes11

Guess what, antelope at Antelope Reservoir. They soon disappeared.antalope12

Night over the water

Tonight’s moon came up over the water just before we retired to our van’s for the night.moon13

Van’s engine dying problem

Well yes I still am having a problem with it. Most of the time it dies it restarts quickly on it’s own. But occasionally it doesn’t restart. I’ve learned when this happens I just turn the key off and back on which restarts the fuel pump right away and the engine starts up quickly.

So I’m pretty sure it needs a new electric fuel pump which I have and will install when we are at Troy as long as it keeps working for now.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow we will continue our journey to Troy which should take most of the day.

I plan to post this on the way when we can get a cell signal.

Nice day today but not yesterday. :O)
