Lots of wild life at Jenner today
Yesterday, I woke up with a sinus headache, so I didn’t get going all day. Just stayed in the house, and couldn’t seem to get started on anything, not even a blog.
But today, I woke feeling much better and was at Jenner around noon and put my boat in the water. It was a beautiful day. Sunny, and calm.
I paddled across to Penny Island and sat for awhile checking out what was going on in the water and in Jenner. Nothing real exciting, but nice just the same.
After awhile I started working my way up the river to just past Eagle’s landing where I sat around for awhile watching from there and eventually headed back down the river on the south side.
Just before I got to the east end of Penny Island an otter surfaced not far in front of me. I watched it for awhile and then it lost me in some bushes and I didn’t see it again.
Here is the otter checking me out when we first saw each other.
Just past that spot , I watched this great blue heron after something?
I’m not sure what it got, but this is a picture just after it struck. I know it got something because it swallowed it shortly after this was taken.
I continued on down the Penny Island back channel to the west end of the island where this seal was resting on a submerged redwood log. Some seals of better looking than others.
The river’s mouth is open
I paddled on down to the river’s mouth to check it out. It was open and since it was high tide, which means the river water wasn’t flowing in or out, I could get real close to the ocean without being sucked on out. Being calm helps too.
This is me, looking out to the Pacific ocean from the river’s mouth. Even the ocean was real calm today.
While I was sitting there, Ken, a guy I know who was kayaking in the ocean, paddled in from the ocean. I shot the bull with him in this spot for awhile.
After talking for a bit, the ocean was so nice, Ken went back out into it. That is Goat Rock in the background and Ken is out there somewhere.
For you guys with not so good eyes, I zoomed in for you. This is Ken in front of Goat Rock. Looks like fun, but I stay in the river. Ken has what they call a dry suit on and knows what he is doing. Only a fool goes out in this water without a wetsuit or a dry suit as the coldness of the water can kill you in less then a half hour. Ken is properly suited.
Eventually, Ken came back in. Said he was having too much fun, but if he stayed out any longer he would be too worn out to work tomorrow. I told him to get retired. :O)
Shortly after he left, I started my trip back in also. This picture shows how calm it was today, looking back up towards Penny Island, just as I started back in for the day from the mouth area.
More birds
There were some geese in the water near the west end of Penny Island as I passed.
And just past them I spied this little bird in the grass on the shoreline checking me out and sorta hiding behind the weeds.
Here’s a little closer shot of him checking me out.
It was so nice out, I took my time going back in, but eventually I made it back to the launch area and pulled my boat out for the day and went home.
Real nice day kayaking Jenner.
