Canceled Yakking, Testing Out the Smoker, Protecting Peeps and Getting Firewood In For The Winter

Sunday September 2, 2018 Guerneville CA.

Kayaking canceled

I was going kayaking today, but it got canceled as Steve was wore out from kayaking yesterday.

So I got up and took care of the chickens.

Testing out the smoker

Then I set up the smoker for a trial run. I haven’t used the smoker in quite a few years so I needed to test things out. I used apple wood for smoke and smoked all day.smoker

Chick protection

I’ve been trying to introduce the little chicks with the big chicks. They need some protection from the bigger chicks so I brought these chucks of wood to the chicken pen and set them up so only the smaller chicks can get behind them. The big chicks like them to sit on.chicks2

Here’s another view of some of the wood chucks I installed.chickens

Getting the wood in

I spent a good part of the day hauling firewood to the firewood pile. This is wood I cut in the yard throughout the year and it needs to get in this pile so I can cover it up when it rains later in the year.wood4

Making a big pot of soup

Towards evening, I cut up a bunch of vegetables and put them in a big pot to boil for a couple hours to make a nice vegetable soup which is still on the stove cooking away.

Just before dark I took the stuff out of the smoker to let it cool but haven’t tried it yet. I did some fish in it with salt and sugar.

That’s it for a nice day.

Nice to protect those small chicks with the wood chunks.
Smoked fish sounds like a treat! And your soup will be good for a few supper meals.
