Chicken Roosts, Marty’s Van Problem, Blown Tire and Harvesting Potatoes

Monday June 25, 2018 Guerneville CA.

Another day working on the chicken stuff

I opened the door to the run this morning but the chicks must of forgot about yesterday as they didn’t just run out.

But eventually they went out and it didn’t take them long to get into the grasses.peeps

We’ve been trying to figure out the problem

Marty was coming by with his van he’s been having a weird problem with it and he showed up just after 11.marty

Trying other parts

His distributor parts hadn’t arrived yet. He was going to put my old six cylinder computer programing chip into  his computer to see if there was any difference. That meant he had to unplug his computer and remove his chip and put mine in and plug the computer back in which he did.

Test drive didn’t go well

He took it down the road for a test run.

I worked on another roost for another pen and got  most of the stuff up when he came back.

When he returned he said at  first it seemed to work, but later it did the same old thing, missed and loaded up when he punched it at high speed.

So we shot the bull for a bit and then he went on home. Later I got an email saying he barely made it home as the problem had gotten worse. I’m thinking maybe the problem lies somewhere in the area he was working, but right now he’s waiting for parts and decided to go to his cabin and forget about it for now. It’s been a trying problem.

Back to working on the roost

I continued to work on the roost.

Here’s the second roost I built out of small redwood trees. It will need some kind of ladder for them to get up to it. It’s not for the small birds until they get larger.roost2

Interrupted nap

I went in the house and was staking a nap when the phone rang. It was my brother Tom who said he needed some help as he had a blowout on his old truck as he was headed home with a heavy load and needed a floor jack and some other stuff to get the spare out from under the truck which he is doing here.blowout3

Of course as he pulled the spare down he thought it might be low on air and the only way we had to test it was to put it on and put some weight on it. It didn’t hold any weight at all, so he took the tire off and I drove back home to air it up. It had almost zero air in it so I aired it up and returned with it and he put it on and I followed him home and all worked ok.

Chicks nap

When I got back home I checked on the chicks. They were in the coop taking a nap. Seems all the playing around tires them out. I threw some mustard weeds in the pen and they all came out to fight over them.chicks4

I finished up what I wanted to do on the roost for now.roost28

Harvesting potatoes

And I harvested some potatoes for dinner tonight and maybe another  meal or two.tatters5

Chicks in for the night

I checked on the chicks just before dark an they were all in the coop settling down for the night. At least I think they are all in the coop as I can’t count them like this.nap6

I went in just before dark and that was my day. Another nice one.

Plugging Holes and Letting the Chicks Out Into a Run For the First Time

Sunday June 24, 2018 Guerneville CA.

Introducing the chicks to the world

I was thinking I’d like to let the little peeps out into the world today, let them out of the coop and into the run.

Closing up holes

But I had to plug up some holes first. Some of the gates I made have too large of openings that some of the smaller chicks could get out so I needed to close them up.

Here’s an example of one of the gates that need to be plugged up for the chicks. They’d be no problem with bigger chickens. Eventually I’ll let them into that high grass but first I want them to get used to a smaller run. I still have a couple of the blackish ones that are small and can squeeze through the 2×1 inch wire.gategap

Plastic pipe works

I cut some plastic pipe and wired it in place.pipewired

Looks like it will do the job.pipes3

I had several other gates I had to do that to and some I did the tops to keep the wild birds out.

Opening up the door

After that was done I looked around to check for holes and it looked ok, so it was time to open the coop door to the outside pen.

The door is open in the back here and the chicks don’t know what to make of it yet.peepers4

This was the first peep to venture out at least onto the open door.oneout4

After a lot of going back in and out a bunch of it’s buddies joined in.peepsout5

A little convincing

They finally made it to the ground as I put some seed on it to help convince them.chicksout7

First dust baths

After a short time I noticed they were all bunched up here so I had a look. They were getting their first dust bath in some good dirt.dusting8

It wasn’t too long before they were all over the pen checking things out and pecking away at everything.peeprun9

They like the tall grass

They seemed to like to get into the tall grass.peepgrass10

First worm

They found a worn and they knew what to do with it. Grab it and run to keep it from the other guys.worm11

Tending the flock

I checked on them throughout the day sorta like a sheep herder watching his flock.yardbirds13

They seemed to be doing just fine having a good ol time.peeps14

There were one of two of these little black ones that could get out the 2×1 inch wire, but not the one inch chicken wire. Just about as soon as they’d get out they wanted back in, I let this one back in  the gate.peepout15

Turning the ground to plant seed

I dug this plot up with a shovel and planted some bird seed in it. I had to turn it over twice to break it up. The grower panel in the back drops down on this, but I didn’t seem to get a picture of the finished product.dirt16

Seed planted

Here it is with the seed in the ground. I did a little dance around on it to pack it in. The automatic sprinkler will come on soon and wet it down.seeded17

Feeding worms

As long as I was digging I collected some nice big ol worms for the chicks. I fed them to them and they had a blast with them running all around trying to keep the others from getting the one they had.

Nap time

I found the yard empty of chicks around 4PM and looked in the coop and they were all huddled in a corner having a nap. Playing in the pen must be hard work. I thought they might be in for the day, but they finally did come back out and were out until just before dark.

I closed them back up in the coop for the night. They seem to like it outside a lot and I thought some of them about doubled in size today.

Working on the roosts

In the evening I started working on my second roost in another pen. I did some more digging for cement blocks so the chicks got some more worms.

I didn’t quite get this roost done, but I got a good start on it which I’ll likely finish tomorrow.

Discovered one more chick

I discovered the shipping label from the chicks shipping box and found out they had given me another free chick I didn’t know about and don’t have which means my brother has one of my chicks or at least I hope he does. If the chick can be located that will bring my total to 32 peeps.

Pretty good day.
