The Old Van Has Been Resurrected

Friday September 3, 2021 Guerneville CA.

Today was the big test

I only had a couple more things to do before I was to hook up the van’s batteries and see if I set the distributor gears timing properly and if and what else either works or doesn’t.

So I was in the van’s battery compartment and hooked up the cables.batteries

This would be the first engine start since I started working on things after the van’s engine fire burnt all the wires up.

Distributor timing

I  needed to get the distributor timing set so the engine would run right, that’s the black thing on the left with the black wires coming out of it.distributor

Something is wrong

So I tuned the key on and off several times to get the fuel pump to run and prime the fuel lines I’d replaced. I didn’t hear the pump run so something was wrong and there was no gas getting to the TBI unit as I could see the injectors.tbi

Light not on

I had noticed the check engine light did not light up when I turned the key on as it should so I suspected that was why the fuel pump hadn’t ran when I turned on the key.nolight

I suspected there might not be getting battery power to the computer so I checked the key-on wire to the computer which was ok.

Wrong wires

Next I checked the fused wire from the battery here and found that I had hooked these two wires up wrong and one of them was power to the computer. I cut the wires and reverse them.wires

Lights on but Temp gauge is not working

And now when I turned on the key the light lite up and I could  hear the fuel pump run for a bit. I noticed that round temperature gauge on the top wasn’t working so I needed to check all it’s wires next.lighton

To get to that gauge’s wires I needed to go through here. I found a box to kneel on to help a bit.van

And then I had to take the wire rats nest apart to check the wires on the gauge. gauge

Battery connectors

But first I needed to disconnect the battery. I’ve been testing out these quick disconnect battery connector for awhile now and really like them as it makes taking the cables on and off real easy and not a pain.clamps

Wrong wire connection

I cut all the tie wraps and found I had a gauge wire going to key-on instead of the battery so fixed that up.ratnest

It’s all working now

Both gauges are working now.gauges

Ready for the big test

So now I was down to what the day was all about starting the engine for the first time after all the repairs.

I tuned the key and it took a bit for gas to get to the TBI unit but when it did it started up, rather rough but running and then died, so I did stuff right or it wouldn’t of done that and now I needed to set the timing.

Setting the timing and fixing the high idle problem

I set the timing with the timing light and the engine ran much better but was running too fast. I found I needed to loosen up the throttle cable as it was too tight and not letting things idle down properly. That fixed that.

Setting the engine’s timing.timing

A-OK

Once I had it running properly I let it run until it got up to operating temperature and checked for gas line leaks and radiator line leaks of which I had none. I did check for gas leaks earlier just in case.

Now that I know everything is ok it’s time to start putting all the little stuff back together and get this project finished up so I can prep it for a trip.

Nice day.

New Freezer and Marty and I Take a Side By Side Ride

Thursday September 2, 2021 Guerneville CA.

Freezer delivery day

I’d said I wanted an afternoon delivery on  my new freezer so what do they do but say it will be delivered anytime between 7 and  11 and said they’d call a half hour before getting to my place.

So at about 10:30 they pulled in to my driveway after calling.

I took all the meat out of the old one while they unboxed the new freezer.freezer

They are taking the old freezer away which is on the left and he’s working on the new one. I was a bit surprised just how big the new one was, maybe a bit larger than I needed. That’s what happens when there are no floor models to look at when I ordered this one.moving

They used these slings to move it on into the house and it barely fit through the door.sling

The crack

The guy is adjusting the casters. Note the crack which I always kidded is the sign of a true professional worker.crack

They got it installed and loaded the old one and were gone.  I plugged the new freezer in and loaded the meat in it. It seems to be cooling down nicely.

Marty shows up for a visit

I had a little nap after that and then went out and did some chair hopping and enjoying the morning until Marty showed up in his old van.marty

Trip planning

We had some planning to do for a trip we are planning to do to Oregon soon so we discussed that and then we walked around the yard sampling strawberries and raspberries and mulberries.

Then I suggested we put some chairs in my brother’s side by side and ride up into the hills for a ride.

Loading up the chairs.sideby

The side by side went along nicely although it was a bit noisy.

Checking a small spring

We stopped at this small spring to make sure it was working as it should. It’s output is down to about a half gallon a minute, about a quarter of what it was earlier in the year.spring

Break time

Then we cruised around some roads and ended up at the Guerneville overlook were we pulled the chairs out and sat down and enjoyed the day shooting the bull.lookout

Eventually we loaded up and took a different route back down the hill where Marty went on home.

Time for another nap.

The roost

Just before dark I went out to shut the chickens up for the night and was pleased to see all the young chickens are finally all going to the roost instead of sleeping on the ground.chicks

Nice day.
