Taking It Easy and Feeding Barley Bran to the Peeps

Thursday July 16, 2020 Guerneville CA.

Just a do noting day

I didn’t have any plans for the day so I spent it chair hopping and puttering around the yard mostly.

I did watch the chicks off and on to see how they were doing.

I have  a lot of little guys of different sizes.peeps

Some more little guys.chicks

Chicken problems

Because of the different sizes of the chicks and Momma hens in different stages of chick development some problems occur mostly because they are all penned up.

For instance I put a hen on eggs last night and she’s the only one on eggs. The other hens in that pen already hatched out their eggs and are dealing with their chicks.

Tizzy

But other hens with older chicks seem to like to mess with the newest hens nesting. They sometimes move right in on her and kick her off the eggs and sit on the eggs. This puts the young hen into a tizzy as it just wants to get back on it’s eggs.

So, to remedy this I moved her nest box into a closed up pen with water and feed where the other hens can’t get into the pen to cause any trouble.

The box in the back is the nest box I moved and shut up in that little pen, so now all is peaceful.box

Barley bran

I’ve had a sack of barley bran that the chickens didn’t really seem to like to eat. I usually mixed it dry into the seed I feed them.

But this time I thought I’d try something different to see if I could get them to eat more of it.

I put the dry bran into a feeder and added water and let it set overnight to swell the bran up.

Once wet it packs into the feeder well.feed

They seem to like the bran better this way eh.feeding

I also did some watering, well turned on the automatic sprinklers here and there in the yard.

So  most of the day I took it easy and enjoyed the day.

Nice day.

A nice day around the place. The peeps are like children sometimes, eh? Stop fighting with your sister, leave your brother alone! Ha ha
Glad they liked the wet barley, I assume it is good for them.
