Fly your kite
I woke in the Kofa this morning to sunshine and some wind, so what do you do on a March day? Fly your kite of course.
I just happened to have a special one that a friend gave to me a long time ago stashed in my van for just such a purpose.
We used to fly kites in grammar school every March when I was a kid, but nothing like this one.
This one comes all stuffed in that little bag.
Kite flying
I tried it out and had a bit of a problem getting it to climb. I tried making some adjustments that helped a bit. More adjustments are needed but it worked good enough for today.
It’s a pretty wild kite that really moves around and sometimes even hits the ground but then it takes off again.
Teaching Gaelyn Videos
While I was having my coffee this morning I thought it would be a good idea to help get Gaelyn started in making videos for YouTube as she needs to supplement her income. She takes a good photo so she just needed to be led through the process of putting a short video together without a lot of trouble.
I was working on doing this myself just before I left home on this trip so it was right up my alley so to speak.
So, after flying the kite and a short nap I went over to her place to show her what and how to do it by doing a test video from start to finish and keeping it real easy to do with what she had in windows to work with. Win10 and 11 have a video editor in the Photos program listed at the top. I had just reviewed it and it was super easy to use and did a good job so we worked with that.
Here’s Gaelyn following my instructions working on the test video after I did it once for her. I like, learn by doing, so that’s what we did.
video clips are needed
She didn’t have too much trouble with that, but now she needed some video clips to make her first video to see how it goes so we planned a walk around the desert after I had a short nap.
First assignment
Many people make YouTube videos using their cell phone so that’s what she was going to use, but she didn’t know how to get the videos from her cell phone to her laptop where we were going to edit her clips to form a video.
So while I was napping I gave her an assignment to figure out how to transfer her video clips from the cell phone to the laptop which she did successfully.
Desert walk for clips
After my nap we took off from our rigs for a walk into the desert. She was to shoot short video clips that she could use to make a quick video in the video editor in the program, Photos, in Windows. She used her cell phone to take the video clips.
Here she is getting her first video clip as we start off on our walk.
We walked on past this old bush going by it on the right and on out into the desert.
Little cactus
She saw this little beaver type cactus and is making a short video clip of it while talking about it while I watched.
We headed through this area before starting our turn back towards camp.
Holes in the ground
She got all excited about these big holes in the ground which are animal burrows and made some more clips.
Got a bit lost
While walking around out there we got a little lost as we lost sight of her rig but we sorta knew where to go, somewhere up ahead.
It’s always nice to see ones rig when one is sorta lost, just up ahead.
When we got back I went to my rig for a nap and she went to hers to work on her video.
Just before dark I went over to see how she had done and see if she needed any help.
Tickled pink
She was all excited when she opened the door as she had successfully put her video clips together to make her video and she was tickled pink as it came out pretty good for a first try.
I thought she’d do pretty good as she is good with photos, but she exceeded my expectations for her first try.
Nice day.
Thanks for all the support. Fun new skills.
Sorry, I meant to say that Bill enjoyed flying his kite at La Posa South too.
I got distracted by Nancy’s comment. Haha
My videos transfer to my computer the same as my pictures do but I wouldn’t know from there what to do. I would think this would be a good hobby for Nancy to do, as well. Her pictures and history stories are always interesting. ;)
Bob, nice that you’ve helped Gaelyn with a new hobby!
So just how DO you get videos from your phone to your computer? I can’t send them via email because the files are too large. Would be fun to try this.
I did the transfer once via cable, USB to USB. Later, we figured out Bluetooth, and that works great.
