Roof repair day
It was back up on Tom’s steel roof today to continue our roof repairs.
The roof doesn’t dry out from the nights dew until about noon. Tom was up there blowing debris off when I arrived to help out.
My job
I continued to patch screw holes that were in the wrong place and leaking. I was working on that row there.
Work area
This was the last row I had to seal today and it took all day to get it done. Tom is working on cleaning off old tar where the electrical comes into the house from the power pole.
Old tar removal
He was using his oscillating tool to help remove the old tar sealer which worked but took some time to do each piece.
The sun was out for a nice day.
Silicone sealer is best
Just after 3 the sun started to go behind the hills to the west so we needed to finish up for the day. Tom moved to these vent pipes and was using acetone to remove as much tar from the pipes as he could so we will be able to use silicone sealer to reseal them instead of the tar as silicone works better and lasts longer.
Finishing up
Then he went back to the power pipe and used the acetone to clean it off good. We will seal these tomorrow when the sun is still out. We just wanted to get them ready to reseal today. I’m still working on sealing the last row of metal that the screw holes need sealed. I’m trying to get all the silicone in the holes today so it can set up some before screwing the metal sheets back down.
Here’s Tom finishing up with the acetone cleaning. He got things looking real good so it should seal real good when we redo these with the silicone sealer.
And I finished up getting all the wrong screw holes sealed up with silicone. I decided to not screw the sheets down yet as I wanted the silicone sealer to cure some more before I did. I left things like this until tomorrow when I’ll screw this all down.
With the sun down the day was cooling down fast so we finished up about four and put the tools away, until tomorrow.
We are making good progress and getting this roof back in shape.
One more day on this for now and some more rains are supposed to come in to test our work.
Nice day.
Happy New Year, Bob!
Hats off to you Bob and Happy New Year. Having a working brother like you are to Tom and your other brothers is without a doubt a very happy new year. Hope to get over there before too long, stay warm.
Happy newer Year, or Newest Year Bob!…….
You had Daffy-dills the other day, today I have -3* and 5′ of that white stuff…
We seem to have the same interests and I hope we can get together some spring-summer and share stories…
I see your chair up on the roof, mine are under cover..
Take Care,
David
